Welcome to Phelan School of Dance. The School was formed in the 70s by Mary Phelan (Examiner) and in 1990 she was joined by Lisa Phelan (Fellow) as Vice Principal. Principal, Mary Phelan, Fellow, Examiner with the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dance has been involved in dance since the age of 8 trained by the Edinburgh legend Betty Brandon. Mary lectures in tap at UKA Conferences and examines for the UKA in Scotland and Northern Ireland. She is also trained in examining for SQA highland/stage exams. Her niece, Lisa Phelan, Vice-Principal, commenced her training at 2 years of age competing successfully in numerous dance styles. At the age of 6yrs she was the West of Scotland Junior Champion in Rock’n'Roll; she was also the winner of the Scottish Disco Kid event. She won the Scottish Freestyle Pairs Championships and represented Scotland in the final heats in London. She is a Fellow with the UKA and lectures for them in Jazz at UKA Conferences. She also lectures primary school teachers on dance at Edinburgh University. Lisa is also a Primary School teacher and through her extensive knowledge of the Early Years, has worked hard to develop our Tweenies Dance class. These classes provide Dance, Music and Movement which is developmentally appropriate for the 2-4 years age group.
Pupils commence classes from age 2 years. Subjects covered include tap, ballet, modern, jazz, highland/national, hip-hop/street and western line. Adult classes are provided in Tap. The UKA dance syllabus is followed and exams are held yearly. There is also an Annual Dance Display in which all pupils participate. Pupils compete successfully in Stage and Highland competitions/championship the length and breadth of the country.
